The Program Director acts as the main liaison between HCPP and partner schools, as well as all other external contacts. They are responsible for the daily logistics and operations of the program, including chairing meetings and taking responsibility for or allocating non-role specific tasks.
4th Year, BSc in Hon. Cellular, Anatomical, Physiological Sciences (CAPS)
How long have you been part of HCPP? This is the fourth year I have been involved with this group. I was a teacher for my first year and the treasurer for the past two years before my current position.
Why did you want to join HCPP? I love playing piano and I love kids! The idea of empowering students through music really speaks to me, and when I heard about this group I knew I had to be a part of it!
What is your vision for your position this year? This year I want to continue strengthening our relationships with the schools at which we teach. I would also love to see HCPP Vancouver increase our outreach with the greater community and expand our volunteer base.
What’s your favourite piano piece? Fur Elise! It is one of the pieces that first inspired me to learn piano.
Fun Fact about you! I can’t handle horror movies!
The Treasurer serves as liaison between HCPP as a campus club and the finance arm of the Alma Mater Society. This involves maintaining an updated budget for the club, managing expenditure and income, and reimbursing members for club-related spending.
3rd Year, BSc in Chemistry
How long have you been part of HCPP? This is my third year with the Heart of the City Piano Program. I was a volunteer piano teacher at Queen Alex Elementary in my first year and this is my second year as an executive.
Why did you want to join HCPP? Growing up, music has been a huge part of my life and development as a person; I want all students to be able to enjoy the benefits of learning music regardless of their situation. I also love working with inner-city youth and empowering them through different avenues. HCPP combines two of my passions perfectly!
What is your vision for your position this year? I hope to increase the cohesiveness of the executive team and the volunteer teachers to improve the volunteer experience with HCPP.
What’s your favourite piano piece? Is it possible to choose only one? If I had to choose, it would have to be Mendelssohn’s Andante and Rondo Capriccioso.
Fun fact about you! I love listening to Christmas music because it always puts me in such a great mood that I end up listening to it year-round.
The Volunteer Coordinators (VCs) liaise with their assigned partner schools via the school staff contact. They are also the main point of contact for volunteer teachers, managing volunteer schedules and communicating regularly with volunteers.
The Head Volunteer Coordinator holds additional responsibilities of assigning volunteers to schools, managing the teaching programs overall, and heading up projects such as school expansion and the guitar initiative.
Kelly Borkowski (Head VC)

How long have you been part of HCPP? This will be my third year with the club.
Why did you want to join HCPP? I wanted to share my passion for piano that allowed others to experience the same love and interest in learning an instrument. I also found it a great way to interact and connect with both the UBC community and elementary students.
What is your vision for your position this year? I hope to generate more excitement about the mission of HCPP to the UBC community, reach out to more elementary schools in the Vancouver area, and also expand our keyboard lending program for students to have a fuller learning experience.
What’s your favourite piano piece? Chopin’s Nocturne No 1 Op 9, but I also love playing Graceful Ghost Rag by William Bolcom
Fun fact about you! I enjoy the sci-fi thriller/horror type movies that make you jump in your seat and spill half your tea on yourself.

How long have you been part of HCPP? I’ve been a part of HCPP since my third year
Why did you want to join HCPP? I’m very passionate about music and I wanted to help facilitate music education for children who would normally not get that experience. I’ve been playing piano since I was five years old and I believe that learning how to play music has enriched my life and opened many different doors for me.
What is your vision for your position this year? This year, I want to help make this club a place for enthusiastic volunteers who want to give back to the community and connect with people with similar interests.

Why did you want to join HCPP? I joined HCPP because I didn’t want to give up piano at University, and I thought the next best thing to playing is teaching.
What is your vision for your position this year? To successfully liaison between the schools and volunteers making sure that lessons can successfully occur every week.

Social Media Director
The Social Media Director promotes and maintains HCPP’s presence on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by making promotional posts and creating Facebook events. This is often done in combination with updating the website and taking pictures for our events.
3rd Year, BMLSc
How long have you been part of HCPP? This is my first year!
Why did you want to join HCPP? I thought it would be a good way to reconnect with piano as I stopped playing after high school. I also strong believe that very student should be able to have the opportunity to learn music no matter their situation!
What is your vision for your position this year? I hope to increase the amount of recognition HCPP receives on UBC campus and around the local community by strategically marketing our events and reaching out for volunteers.
What’s your favourite piano piece? Definitely Rachmaninoff’s Prelude Op 3 No 2 in C Sharp minor.
Fun fact about you! I love to drink coffee although it keeps me up at night!
The Secretary documents executive meeting minutes and assists the Program Directors in internal responsibilities. The Communications Director maintains the [email protected] email and is the first point of contact between the executive and the outside world.
How long have you been part of HCPP? I have been a part of HCPP for one year.
Why did you want to join HCPP? As a music student, I am keenly aware that playing an instrument has many benefits, not least of which is an outlet of self-expression and self-discovery. I believe there is nothing more wonderful than being able to share that with children that may not otherwise have had the opportunity to discover the joy of music from someone who loves it.
What is your vision for your position this year? My vision for the coming year is to create stronger connections within the HCPP team, especially between volunteers and the exec team. I hope to create comprehensive minutes and engaging newsletters to keep everyone up-to-date.
What’s your favourite piano piece? I have many, but a favourite would be Kapustin’s Etude No.8 “Finale.”
Fun fact about you! I am addicted to chocolate and cheese – the way to my heart is definitely through food and music 😉
The Events Coordinator plans and manages the events put on by HCPP, including volunteer orientation and appreciation events, fundraisers, Charity Concerts, and the Year-End Recital. Other duties include booking locations and assigning event tasks to other executive members.
3rd Year, BA in Commerce
How long have you been part of HCPP? I was a volunteer as a piano teacher in HCPP from Jan 2015.
Why did you want to join HCPP? I joined HCPP last semester simply because I want to use my skill in a more meaningful way – provide an opportunity to those kids who want but do not have the ability to enter the music world.
What is your vision for your position this year? Trying to involve more volunteers in our traditional events. At the same time, think and organize some new activities that can promote our club in a wider way.
What’s your favourite piano piece? Bashu painting – SiChuan folk song that is composed by HuWei Huang.
Fun fact about you! Usually I will go to gym or just dance by myself in the room or go somewhere for hiking or read books while listening to music in my free time.
Public Relations Coordinator
The Public Relations Coordinator promotes HCPP to external bodies, including individuals, businesses, community organizations, and the community at large. This is often done in combination with seeking out sponsorship and other donations as well as support and non-monetary contributions.

What is your vision for your position this year? I hope to find more sponsors to provide us with the funds for this club to thrive even more!

Head of Performance Troupe
The Head of Performance Troupe is responsible for liaising with existing and new venue sponsors, as well as recruiting and scheduling performers.
How long have you been part of HCPP? I have volunteered two years as a piano teacher with HCPP.
Why did you want to join HCPP? As a child, I studied piano with a teacher who truly cared, one who gave 100% of herself to each student. HCPP strives to make it possible for every child, regardless of economic background, to have that kind of nurturing.
What is your vision for your position this year? I want to provide clear communications between existing venue sponsors and volunteer performers, and to also encourage actual HCPP students to share what they have learned through performing.
What’s your favourite piano piece? Cesar Franck’s quietly moving Prelude, Fugue and Variation.
Fun fact about you! My dog, Sparkle, works at the medical clinic and in the piano studio with me. 🙂
