The Heart of the City Piano Program is a non-profit organization that provides piano lessons for inner-city children. Originating in Saskatoon, the program now extends to multiple cities across Canada. In Vancouver, we hope to provide an opportunity for members of the community to share their love of music with children who may not otherwise have the opportunity to learn how to play the piano. To popular demand, we are also working to expand the program to include guitar lessons.
Our volunteers provide one-on-one piano/guitar lessons to students at inner-city elementary schools at no charge. In addition to providing weekly instrument lessons, volunteers teach rudimentary music theory to the children. Throughout the year, we organize events such as the Year-End Recital, which is an opportunity for students to celebrate their learning.
For the children, the Heart of the City Piano Program is a chance to learn and create music. When young students realize their potential in creating music, the whole world opens up to them: they become a part of the beauty around them and realize that they are more than capable of accomplishing whatever they set their minds upon. Our program seeks to reach those children who would benefit the most from individual music lessons.
For the volunteers, HCPP provides an excellent teaching opportunity and a chance to be the change in a child’s life. Our dedicated volunteers serve as positive role models to the children and ambassadors to the inner-city community.
